Homework 2/22/13
ELA:
Homework:
Analyze Causes and Effects: Persuasive Essay
In “Eureka: Scientific Twists of
Fate,” the parents of a young boy named James
Phipps took a huge risk. They
allowed him to be the first person to receive the smallpox vaccination by
letting Dr. Jenner inject him with cowpox tissue and then purposely expose him
to smallpox. Decide what you think of the parents’ actions. Were they right to
risk his life? Was Dr. Jenner right to purposely expose him to the potentially
deadly infection? Why didn’t Dr. Jenner test his idea by injecting himself with
cowpox?
Write a persuasive essay in which
you either defend or condemn the parents’ and/or Dr. Jenner’s actions. Support
you positions with convincing reasons and specific facts and details. You may
not use the fact that the experiment was a success as part of their arguments,
since no one knew the outcome at the time the decision was made.
